Windows bugs are often weird and wonderful and the patch KB977165 seems to be causing weird problems all over. Mainly blue screens but i think i may have discovered a new one and i thought i’d post it out there for everyone!

My girlfriend asked me to fix her laptop (hp 530, vista installed) , the error it would seem that the keyboard and mouse weren’t working. i plugged in a USB mouse and that worked, unfortunately i had no usb keyboard so i got the on screen keyboard (good thing thats on the log in screen). i checked device manager and pretty much everything was crying about something, updating drivers wasn’t working so i thought id go with good old system restore.

System restore! The process to make your computer work like it did yesterday, wonderfull idea, rarely works… But today, im very happy to say, it actually did work!

I restored it to about a week ago, since then only 4 things had changed. i had installed avast, rapport and two windows updates. Now no offence windows, but in that list your the one i suspect.

Especially as it had worked pretty well with the first two things for a few days and lets face it avast is good..apart from when it scares you to death with its update…when u think the computers off and you’ve got into bed…=P. I also doubt Rapport has that kind of access.

The first update was something to do with office but the second was KB977165, So by process of elimination im assuming that was the culprit, I’ll admit i dont know for sure so im not saying its the devil. But if your having a similar problem…

-Plug in some usb peripherals -if you dont have a keyboard, use on screen keyboard, bottom left (Ease of access)

-Run system restore

-it should work now =]

-To stop the update installing again (i repeat im not saying this is definatley the problem, and you might want to check documentation on KB977165 first) go into windows update->important updates, right click on KB977165 and say “hide update”, and there we go!

*DISCLAIMER* if privillages are raised, and your computer is then as a result hacked then its not my fault =] but lets face it, its pretty annoying without the inbuilt keyboard and mouse so you may aswell take the risk. Im pretty sure microsoft are fixing the security holes through other means so i wouldn’t lose sleep over it =]!
